Introduction To Professional Writing, 3 hrs. Fall & Spring; W & S designators: A study of the history, theories, concepts, and practices of professional writing. Topics: audience analysis, language, professional writing situations, ethics and communication, workplace culture, research methods, data collection strategies and analysis.
In this course, you will actively practice professional workplace communication skills by studying and employing the strategies, forms and techniques of effective persuasive writing. This is a hands-on class in which you will learn by doing.
You will learn:
- The basic philosophy, ethics, principles and forms of professional communication.
- Basic professional writing skills by creating documents representative of the basic business writing genres: letters, memos, brochures, newsletters, and short reports.
- How to evaluate and write for specific reading audiences.
- Editing and computer skills.
- Basic primary and secondary research methods and resources, including surveys, interviews, electronic databases, and web resources.
- How to create and use effective visual elements in your texts.
- How to work effectively in teams.
- How to give professional oral presentations
