About the Internship Program

What is the Rhetoric and Technical Writing internship program?

Internships are the beginning steps of your career path. They can lead you to an unexpectedly rich network of resources, contacts, and opportunities. To prepare students for a competitive job market, we require our majors to complete an internship. Internships help students professionalize and prepare for the realities of the job market and workforce, which can be quite different from their experiences in the classroom. Internships in rhetoric and technical writing are open to all English majors; however, if you are concentrating in Rhetoric and Technical Writing, an internship of at least 3 credit hours is required.

What are the benefits of completing an internship?

Internships are a crucial steppingstone for students entering the job market. They provide invaluable hands-on experience and significantly increase the likelihood of securing a full-time position. Nationally, close to 70% of interns receive job offers from the companies they intern with, and 80% of those offers are accepted. Additionally, students who complete internships are 15% less likely to be unemployed in the years following graduation. Graduates with internship experience often command higher starting salaries, with a median across all industries of $47,470 compared to $37,330 for those without internship experience. In the rhetoric and technical writing industry, the numbers are even higher.

What types of internships can I complete?

Here is a list of internship examples that previous students have done. From this list, you may gain an idea of the many types of internship placements that may be available to you. However, while the listed units, businesses, and agencies have taken interns from our program in the past, don’t assume that they will have a spot available when you wish to do your internship. Keeping an open mind and a keen curiosity about your potential career are keys to success when it comes time for you to seek and establish your internship placement.
