Course Description: A practice in the art of persuasive writing, using the law and legal methods to emphasize both the economy and clarity of reading and writing skills.
This course emphasizes the development of clarity, economy, and persuasiveness in writing. Because legal writing at its best can exemplify such style, we will examine legal and law-related documents to assess the nature of effective narrative and the role of principles (implicit or explicit) in clear communication.
You will learn how to prepare for and conduct an investigatory interview, perform legal research, review and summarize a factual record, and draft a brief in a discrimination case. The course gives you an experience analogous to that of a first-year associate in a law firm.
Grades will be based on class participation, three papers, and a final examination.
